The nationwide effort to end the use of single-use plastics has resumed since the start of the Pandemic. Eight states have existing bans on single-use plastics, with more states shifting to adopt these restrictions. Virginia Governor Northam signed an executive order in April to "eliminate the buying, selling and distribution of all non-medical, single-use plastic and polystyrene objects -- even those utilized for public health and safety use."
Many states with existing restrictions are continually adding more stringent measures. Hawai'i recently implemented Bill 40, which prevents all Honolulu businesses from using polystyrene foam food ware and disposable plastic food and service ware beginning January 2022.
Despite the need for these measures to help fight against plastic pollution, these changes will be costly for businesses. Failure to adapt quickly may result in fines or financial loss due to product waste. In addition, the growing demand for alternative options in a limited new market could significantly drive up the costs of new products.
